Curator's Notes
Photography was first introduced to Egypt shortly after the invention of the daguerreotype in 1839. the first known photograph of Egypt was taken by the French photographer Edouard Delessert.​Early photographers like Felix Vallotton and Joseph Philibert Girault de Prangey visited Egypt, capturing images of its landscapes, monuments and people.

In the 19th century, Egyptian talent started to emerge in the commercial photography studio scenes mainly producing portraits and documentary photographs. By the early 20th century, Egyptian photographers like Gamal Al-Sheikh, Youssef Chahine and Khaled Hegazi started to gain prominence by exploring themes related to national identity and culture.

Today, Egyptian photographers are gaining international recognition, blending traditional themes with modern techniques to create impactful and thought-provoking works.

Similar to those before her, Susan Mahmoud has a profound appreciation for the essence of Egyptian culture and its people.
