Curator's Notes
Historically, women would weave at home, perhaps their only outlet for work. Today, one group "leader" would gather other women to her home, provide them with locally sourced raw materials, and they then work together forming a creative and supportive community.
Traditionally, a Nubian bride would be surrounded by baskets on her wedding night. They would be placed on the ceiling and walls, presenting her dowry as many of the traditional items of the Nubian household were made in basketry.
Misreya partners with three collectives across southern Egypt to produce our artisan products.
