Curator's Notes
A Mashrabiya (مشربية) is a projecting window or wooden lattice screen that is a characteristic feature of traditional Islamic architecture. Mashrabiyas are often found on balconies and windows, and can be elaborate and intricately carved. They can also be made with stained glass. Today they can be made into screens, door frames and other custom applications.
Mother of Pearl (لؤلؤة البحر ) pronounced "loulou'at al-bahr" is known for its iridescent sheen, is a material derived from the inner layer of the shells of mollusks such as oysters and abalone. Artisans in the Middle East have traditionally used Mother of Pearl in intricate inlay work, decorating items such as jewelry boxes, furniture, and decorative panels. The use of mother of pearl is often associated with luxury and fine craftsmanship.
